When the world shut down during the pandemic, a new breed of fitness enthusiasts emerged: the “COVID kids.” These are the teens and young adults who came of age in a time when gyms were closed, and online workouts or solo training became the norm. Their fitness journey began in bedrooms, garages, and parks, guided by screens and apps. While this era fostered independence and creativity, it also left a gap: the sense of community and connection that only group fitness can provide.

For those of us who’ve spent more than the last few decades in the fitness industry, the shift is stark. We remember the energy of packed classes, the camaraderie of shared goals, and the motivation that comes from being surrounded by others. But for many of these younger fitness enthusiasts, the idea of group exercise can feel foreign or even intimidating.

This is where we as seasoned fitness professionals, come in. It’s time to bridge the gap and show them what they’ve been missing: the power of collective energy and the value of human connection once again.

Understanding the COVID Generation

To engage these individuals we need to understand their perspective. They’ve grown up in a world of hyper-personalised apps, self-guided programs and workout videos on demand. They value convenience, autonomy, and results - But many have never experienced the magic of a room full of people working toward a common goal — or the guidance of a coach who can adapt on the fly to their needs mid workout.

Reframing Group Fitness for Modern Audiences

To attract this group, we need to evolve group fitness:

  • Showcase inclusivity. Create spaces where beginners and experienced participants feel equally welcome.

  • Embrace technology. Integrate wearables, metrics, and app-based features into classes to appeal to tech-savvy participants.

  • Highlight community. Market the benefits of connection, like accountability, shared achievements, and the social aspects of fitness.

The Role of the Fitness Instructor/Trainer/Coach

As experienced fitness professionals, we are uniquely positioned to lead this revival. We know how to read a room, motivate diverse groups, and create a vibe that no app or screen can replicate. By blending our expertise with the tools this generation already loves, we can redefine what group fitness looks like — and why it matters.

Here's Our Call-to-Action

The COVID generation doesn’t need more apps, online 'programs' or YouTube videos — they need leaders who can inspire them, connect them, and show them the power of togetherness. Let’s make it our mission to reintroduce the joy of group training and populate the next generation with options that make them feel seen, supported, and unstoppable.
